We train and certify institutions on basic first aid skills

acknowledging the health burden that HIV has cause in the country affecting millions, HLZ offers counselling services to all who need it .

This is our story
Health Literacy Zambia is a non-profit organization founded in 2017 by a group of students with the majority being medical students from UNZA,CBU other professionals. Despite the majority of the membership being medical students, the organization also includes non- medical students and individuals of various professional backgrounds such as law, Agriculture, Engineering, teaching etc.
Health Literacy Zambia had its first outreach program on the 24th of December, 2017 at Umoyo Widows and Orphanage charity organization that is situated in Zingalume, Lusaka, Zambia. The outreach involved health education and donations of school stationery to over 97 vulnerable children who are under the care of at Umoyo Widows and Orphanage charity organization. The organization had only four members at the time of its first outreach. From that time, the organization started to grow in numbers and had its first ever AGM on the 8th February, 2018 at Global Platform Zambia where it was agreed to register the organization under the ministry of community development and social welfare. The organization is now fully registered under the ministry of community development and social welfare.
Health Literacy Zambia (HLZ) was built with the major goal of increasing health awareness as a way to combating preventable disease. The major aim was coupled with humanitarian works to fight illiteracy by providing a suitable environment for learning for all citizens with emphasis on the vulnerable. This holistic approach has in the past few months proven to have a measurable and effective way of addressing health and illiteracy in Zambia.
Health Literacy Zambia focus is on the socio-economically disadvantaged groups of women, youth and children. Not overlooking the overall social and cultural practices of their respective societies and the overall power imbalances and discriminations that exist at all levels; the major focus amongst these groups, is again on most vulnerable and the marginalized ones. HLZ also focuses on the inclusion of minorities and special groups such as widows and physically disabled persons and elderly people.
